How to re-grip your clubs

A fresh grip changes everything you feel through the club — traction, feedback, the way pressure settles into your hands. Regripping is a job you can do at home in about ten minutes per club, with a few basic tools. Watch the full walkthrough, or follow the six steps below.

What you'll need

  • Your set of new Geoleap grips
  • Hook blade or sharp utility knife
  • Double-sided grip tape (2" recommended)
  • Grip solvent (mineral spirits also works)
  • A marker
  • A clean towel and a tray to catch excess solvent

Step 1 — Remove the old grip and tape

Remove the old grip and existing tape

Run a hook blade down the length of the old grip, always cutting away from your body, and peel it off. Strip away the existing tape until the shaft is clean and smooth — any leftover residue will telegraph through a new grip.

Step 2 — Measure and mark

Place the new grip over the shaft and mark the length

Lay the new grip alongside the shaft, lined up with the butt end, and mark where it ends with a marker. This tells you exactly how far down to run your tape.

Step 3 — Apply the tape

Adhere the tape onto the shaft and peel off the backing

Adhere the double-sided tape along the shaft up to your mark, then peel off the backing. Leave about an inch hanging past the butt end, twist it, and tuck it into the open end of the shaft.

Step 4 — Add solvent

Pour solvent over the tape and inside the grip

Spray solvent over the taped section of the shaft. Then spray solvent inside the new grip, cover the small hole in the cap end with a finger, and shake so the whole interior is coated. Pour any remainder over the tape. Solvent activates the tape and lets the grip slide on — once it's wet, work quickly. You have less than a minute before it tacks up.

Step 5 — Slide on and align

Push the grip onto the shaft and align it with the clubface

In one smooth, continuous motion, push the grip onto the shaft until the butt end seats firmly against the cap. While the solvent is still wet, square the grip — line up the logo, or the alignment marks on the cap and mouth, with the clubface.

Tip: drape a towel over the cap end as you push — solvent can spray out the top.

Step 6 — Wipe and cure

Wipe excess solvent with a towel and let dry

Gently wipe any excess solvent off the grip and shaft with a towel. Let the club dry for about 2 hours before you play.

That's it. A clean regrip lasts a full season or more. When the texture starts to glaze over or you lose feedback in wet conditions, it's time to do it again.
